What does a day with turnout tracking look like?

A day with turnout tracking starts on each horse's Turnout tab in the mobile app, not on a whiteboard. The tab shows the horse's turnout schedule (Full Turnout, Limited, Stall Rest or Hand Walk Only), its assigned pasture, turnout notes and turnout gear. Say Maple is on Limited turnout with the note "PM only, no turnout with mares," a grazing muzzle flag, and one turnout checklist task: "Put grazing muzzle on before turnout."

At the 6:30 AM feeding round, that task shows up as a checkoff next to Maple's feed. When a groom taps it, BarnOps saves who checked it off and when. Bell boots, grazing muzzle and hoof boots show as chips on the horse list, and horses on stall rest are flagged, so whoever is leading horses down the aisle sees it without opening every profile.

Where each horse goes is set on the Pastures screen. A manager opens North Field, taps Add Horse and picks from the horses that are not assigned yet. If Maple and Biscuit are recorded as incompatible and both end up in North Field, the pasture shows an Incompatibility Conflict warning with the reason. If Biscuit leaves for a show, an approved Horse Away record drops him off the feeding round until his return date.

What gets recorded?

BarnOps records each horse's turnout plan, its pasture, the checkoffs staff make, and any time the horse is off the property.

• ✓Turnout notes, plus a "Turnout at night" checkbox on the web horse form.

Who can see and change it?

Owners and managers control pasture placement, while staff and boarders work with the horse-level turnout details.

• ✓Barn owners and managers: everything. They add pastures, move horses between them, record incompatible pairs, and approve Horse Away requests. Away records they enter themselves are approved right away.
• ✓Staff: see the pastures and who is in them on the mobile app, edit a horse's Turnout tab (status, notes, gear, checklist tasks), and check off turnout tasks during feeding rounds. They cannot add pastures or move horses between pastures.
• ✓Boarders: see and edit the Turnout tab for their own horses only, and can submit Horse Away dates for them. A boarder's away request waits for an owner or manager to approve it.
• ✓Instructors and trainers do not get the Pastures page on the web dashboard.

What are the limits?

Turnout tracking covers the plan, placement and morning checklist, but it is not a minute-by-minute in-and-out log.

• ✓There is no separate "turned out at 7:02, brought in at 4:15" log. Confirmation happens through turnout checklist tasks, and turnout tasks always land on the AM feeding round.
• ✓On the web dashboard, a move that would put incompatible horses together or push a pasture past its horse limit stops and asks "Assign anyway?" The mobile pasture screen does not block the move. It shows the conflict warning and an Over capacity flag afterward.
• ✓A horse marked away drops off feeding rounds and blanket recommendations, but it stays assigned to its pasture until someone moves it.
• ✓The Pastures screen needs a connection. If it cannot load within about 8 seconds, it shows a retry message instead of old data.
• ✓Turnout and pasture tools are part of BarnOps Core ($79/month). You don't need Command for them.

How do you set it up?

Setup takes about as long as walking the barn once: add pastures, fill in each horse's turnout plan, then assign horses.

• ✓Add each pasture or paddock with a name, a short name, acreage and a maximum number of horses, from Add Pasture on mobile or the Pastures page on the web.
• ✓Open each horse's Turnout tab and set the status, notes, gear flags and any checklist tasks.
• ✓Assign horses to pastures from the pasture's Add Horse sheet on mobile, or from the Pastures page or horse profile on the web.
• ✓Record known incompatible pairs on a pasture screen, with a short reason such as "kicks at feeding time."
• ✓Ask boarders to enter show and clinic dates under Horse Away, then approve them.
