What does a day of barn communication look like in BarnOps?

A day of barn communication in BarnOps runs through a few shared channels and private messages, all in the Chat tab. Every new barn starts with five channels: Announcements, Barn-Wide, Staff Ops, Boarder Channel, and Lesson Program. At 7:00 AM the manager sees rain coming and posts in Announcements, starting from the Weather quick-fill: "Weather alert: horses stay in this afternoon, turnout moves to tomorrow." Everyone at the barn can read it. Eligible members can receive a push when their notification settings and registered device allow it; delivery is not guaranteed.

In Staff Ops, a staff member posts a photo of a loose shoe on Maple so the manager can call the farrier. Boarders never see that channel. Later the manager sends Maple's owner a private message about the farrier visit. Once the owner opens it, the manager's message shows Seen by with her name.

That evening the manager long-presses a reminder she sent earlier that is now out of date to delete it, and opens a thread's member list to see when each person last read it. Every message shows when it was sent, so nobody has to guess whether the gate reminder is from this week or last month.

What gets recorded?

Each thread and message is stored with its sender and time:

• ✓Thread: name, type (announcement, barn-wide, staff, boarder, lesson, or private), who created it, and its members.
• ✓Message: sender, text, the time it was sent, and an optional photo or video.
• ✓Reactions: emoji reactions and who added them.
• ✓Read status: each member's last-read time, shown as Seen by on your latest sent message and in the member list.
• ✓Push notifications: a preview of the first 120 characters, or "Sent a photo" for images.

Who can see and change it?

Every barn role has Chat, and each channel's type decides who sees it.

• ✓Announcements and Barn-Wide: everyone in the barn can read. Only owners and managers can post announcements.
• ✓Staff Ops: owners, managers, and staff.
• ✓Boarder Channel: the owner, boarders, and clients.
• ✓Lesson Program: the owner, instructors, students, and clients.
• ✓Private messages: only the people added to the conversation. Anyone can leave a private chat.
• ✓Owners and managers can create channels and delete any thread. The person who started a thread can delete it too. People can delete their own messages from the phone app.

What are the limits?

Chat is for messages between people at your barn, not outside contacts.

• ✓There is no SMS or email delivery for barn chat. People need the app or the web dashboard to read messages. Phone push notifications depend on the person's settings, device permissions and connection; check urgent instructions directly rather than relying on an alert.
• ✓Announcements go to the whole barn. To reach one group, post in that group's channel, such as Staff Ops.
• ✓Messages can't be edited after sending. Delete and resend instead. Deleting a thread removes it and all its messages for everyone.
• ✓On the web dashboard you can attach photos up to 10 MB. Videos, up to 2 minutes, are sent from the phone app.
• ✓On the web dashboard, a thread opens with its latest 200 messages.

How do you set it up?

Most of it is set up for you when the barn is created.

• ✓Create your barn. The five standard channels are made automatically.
• ✓Invite people with the right role. New members are added to the channels their role can see, including after a role change.
• ✓Add your own channels from Chat with the Channel button and pick who it's for.
• ✓Start a private message with New DM. Pick people one at a time or add a group like All Staff or All Boarders.
• ✓Make sure everyone allows notifications on their phone.
